Roofing Calculator: How Many Shingle Bundles Do You Actually Need?

Calculate roof surface area, roofing squares, and shingle bundles from footprint dimensions and pitch, including a waste factor. Free, client-side.

A roof’s footprint area (the ground it covers) isn’t the same as its actual surface area — slope adds real square footage you need to account for when ordering shingles. Our roofing calculator does that conversion for you.

Why pitch changes the math

A flat roof and a steeply pitched roof covering the same footprint need very different amounts of material — the steeper the slope, the more surface area is packed into the same footprint. The calculator applies a pitch multiplier based on your rise-over-12 ratio:

Pitch multiplier = √(144 + rise²) / 12
Roof area = Footprint area × Pitch multiplier

A common 6/12 pitch (6 inches of rise per 12 inches of horizontal run) gives a multiplier of about 1.118 — meaning the actual roof surface is about 12% larger than the flat footprint.

Squares and bundles

Roofers price and estimate in “squares” — exactly 100 square feet of roof surface. Standard asphalt shingles are packaged so that 3 bundles cover 1 square, which is why the calculator converts your total area into both squares and a bundle count.

Example

A 40ft × 30ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) at a 6/12 pitch with a 10% waste factor works out to about 1,342 sq ft of actual roof area, roughly 14.76 squares, and 45 bundles.

Don’t skip the waste factor

Real installations lose material to cuts around edges, valleys, hips, ridges, and vents. A 10-15% waste factor is typical for simple gable roofs; more complex roof shapes with lots of angles may need 15-20% or more.
