Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the character count different from what a simple .length check in JavaScript would give?

This tool counts by Unicode code point (using the spread operator on the string) rather than by UTF-16 code unit, so characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane — like many emoji — are correctly counted as one character each instead of two.

What does the "Bytes (UTF-8)" stat measure, and why does it matter?

It shows how many bytes the text would take up when encoded as UTF-8, which is what many APIs, databases, and SMS gateways actually bill or limit against — non-ASCII characters (accented letters, emoji, CJK text) take more than one byte each, so this can differ meaningfully from the character count.

Are the platform limits (Twitter/X, SMS, etc.) always exactly accurate?

They reflect commonly cited, typical limits as reference points, but some platforms have nuances (e.g. SMS segment limits change if you mix in certain Unicode characters, and Twitter/X historically counted some characters, like CJK ideographs, as worth more than one) — treat them as a close guide rather than a guaranteed exact match.

Does this tool send my text anywhere to count it?

No — everything is computed locally in your browser using plain JavaScript string operations; nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.

Why does the progress bar turn red when I go over a limit?

It's a quick visual cue — the bar fills proportionally to your text length against that platform's limit and switches to a warning color near the limit, then red once you exceed it, so you can see at a glance which platforms your text still fits within.
