Frequently Asked Questions

How is the "nearest" color determined?

By calculating the Euclidean distance between your input color's RGB values and every one of the 148 standard CSS named colors' RGB values — the color with the smallest distance is the closest visual match, and the tool also shows the next four closest for comparison.

Where does the list of 148 named colors come from?

The full standard set of CSS Color Module Level 4 named colors (aliceblue through yellowgreen), the same names browsers recognize when used directly as CSS color values like `color: rebeccapurple;`.

Can I search by color name instead of entering a hex value?

Yes — the search box below the result filters the full named-color reference grid by name, and clicking any swatch loads its hex value into the finder above.

What does "distance 0.0" mean in the result?

A distance of exactly 0 means your input hex value is an exact match for that named color's RGB value — for example, #ff0000 is an exact match for "red".

Can I use the native color picker instead of typing a hex code?

Yes — the color swatch input next to the hex field opens your browser's native color picker, and picking a color there updates the hex field and nearest-match result automatically.
