A CSS 3D flip card uses perspective on the outer scene wrapper, transform-style: preserve-3d on the inner flipping element, and backface-visibility: hidden on both faces so only one side is ever visible at a time. The back face is pre-rotated 180° so it appears correctly oriented once the card flips. No JavaScript is required for the flip animation itself — only a CSS class toggle (on hover or click) is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a CSS flip card actually work under the hood?

It combines three properties: `perspective` on the outer wrapper (to create the illusion of 3D depth), `transform-style: preserve-3d` on the inner flipping element (so its children keep their own 3D positions instead of flattening), and `backface-visibility: hidden` on both faces (so each face disappears when it's rotated away from the viewer).

Why does the back face need its own rotation?

The back face is pre-rotated 180° in its resting state so that once the whole card flips 180°, the back face ends up right-side-up facing the viewer instead of mirrored — without this pre-rotation, the back content would appear backwards after the flip.

What's the difference between hover and click triggers?

"Hover" flips the card automatically whenever the mouse is over it and flips back when the mouse leaves — great for desktop-only reveal effects — while "click" toggles the flip state on tap/click, which works better on touch devices where there's no true hover state.

Does this require any JavaScript to work on my site?

No — the flip itself is pure CSS, driven by a `:hover` pseudo-class or a toggled class name; JavaScript in this tool is only used to update the live preview and generate the copyable CSS, not to perform the actual flip animation.

Can I flip vertically instead of horizontally?

Yes — switch the "flip axis" dropdown to rotateX for a vertical top-to-bottom flip instead of the default rotateY horizontal left-to-right flip.
