Effective discount

Stacked discounts apply sequentially (the second percentage is taken off the already-discounted price, not the original), which is how most "extra X% off" sale promotions actually work — the combined effective discount is always less than simply adding the two percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the "effective discount" lower than the two percentages added together?

Stacked discounts apply sequentially — the second percentage is taken off the already-reduced price, not the original. For example, 25% off followed by a further 10% off only totals a 32.5% effective discount, not 35%, because the second discount is calculated on a smaller base.

What order are the two discounts applied in?

Discount 1 is applied to the original price first, then Discount 2 is applied to that already-discounted result — matching how "extra X% off already-reduced items" sale promotions typically work at checkout.

Can I use this for just a single discount?

Yes — leave the second discount field at 0% and the tool behaves as a standard single-discount calculator, showing the amount saved and final price for just the first percentage.

Does this account for sales tax?

No — this calculates the discounted item price only. Add any applicable sales tax to the final price afterward, since tax rates vary by location and are usually applied after discounts.
