Frequently Asked Questions

How is total wall area calculated?

The calculator multiplies your room's perimeter (2 × (length + width)) by the ceiling height to get total wall area — this assumes a simple rectangular room without subtracting door/window openings, so treat the result as a starting estimate rather than a final material order.

Why is there a 10% waste allowance on sheets?

Drywall sheets rarely divide evenly into a room's dimensions, and cuts around corners, outlets, and openings create offcuts that can't always be reused — a 10% buffer is a common contractor rule of thumb to avoid a mid-job supply run.

Why 1.5 screws per square foot?

Standard drywall installation calls for screws roughly every 12-16 inches along framing members, which works out to approximately 1.5 screws per square foot of drywall for typical 16-inch stud spacing — actual counts can vary with framing spacing and local building code requirements.

Should I choose 4×8 or 4×12 sheets?

4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) are easier to handle alone and more common for DIY projects, while 4×12 sheets (48 sq ft) cover more area per sheet and can mean fewer seams to tape and finish on taller walls — but they're heavier and often need two people to install safely.
