Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between EAN-8, EAN-13, and UPC-A?

They're all retail barcode formats using the same weighted check-digit algorithm, differing only in length — UPC-A (common in the US/Canada) is 12 digits, EAN-13 (the international standard) is 13 digits, and EAN-8 is a shortened 8-digit form used on small packaging.

How does the check digit calculation work?

Starting from the rightmost data digit, digits alternate between a weight of 3 and 1. The weighted sum is taken mod 10, and the check digit is whatever value (0-9) makes the total a multiple of 10.

What happens if I enter a code that's exactly one digit short?

The tool detects this and computes the correct check digit for you, so you can generate a valid full barcode from just the data digits.

Can this tool look up what product a barcode belongs to?

No — it only validates the checksum structure of a barcode number. Looking up the actual product requires querying a barcode database or retailer API, which this client-side tool doesn't do.
