Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the slug called IPv4 validator if it also accepts IPv6?

Because the component was expanded beyond IPv4. It validates plain IPv4, plain IPv6, and CIDR-style input for both, then switches its analysis output based on the detected version.

Can I paste an address with a prefix like /24 or /64?

Yes. The input accepts CIDR notation, and the tool validates prefixes up to /32 for IPv4 and up to /128 for IPv6.

Is the Reverse DNS field doing a real DNS lookup?

No. It only constructs the PTR-style reverse mapping locally. For IPv4 that means an in-addr.arpa name, and for IPv6 it builds the ip6.arpa nibble-reversed form.

Why does the IPv6 decimal field just say 128-bit instead of showing a huge number?

That is a current limitation of this tool. It computes expanded, compressed, binary, and hex forms for IPv6, but it does not calculate the full decimal integer value.

Does it understand IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses like ::ffff:192.0.2.33?

Yes. The code expands embedded IPv4 into hex groups before validating, and it labels ::ffff-style addresses as IPv4-mapped in the classification output.
