These are the standard, unmodified license texts with only the year/name placeholders filled in (GPL-3.0 shows the standard short notice, not the full ~700-line license body — link to the full text from gnu.org for that). This is informational, not legal advice; consult a lawyer for licensing decisions that matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which licenses are included?

MIT, Apache License 2.0 (short notice form), BSD 3-Clause, ISC, GNU GPL v3.0 (FSF-recommended short notice), and The Unlicense — covering the most commonly chosen permissive and copyleft licenses on GitHub.

Why does the Apache-2.0 and GPL-3.0 output look shorter than the real license?

Both are genuinely long documents (Apache-2.0 is roughly 200 lines, GPL-3.0 is roughly 700). This tool generates the standard short-form notice each project recommends including in individual source files or a NOTICE, along with a reminder to fetch and include the full canonical license text as your LICENSE file.

Is this legal advice on which license to choose?

No. This tool only formats standard, unmodified license text with your year and name substituted in — it doesn't recommend a license for your situation. If licensing terms materially affect your project, consult a lawyer or resources like choosealicense.com.

Can I edit the generated text afterward?

You can copy it anywhere and edit it, but be aware that modifying standard license text (beyond the year/name placeholders) can create ambiguity about which license actually applies — most projects use these texts verbatim for that reason.

Does this run any check on my existing LICENSE file?

No — this is a one-way generator, not a linter. It produces fresh license text from your inputs; it doesn't parse or validate an existing file.
