Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the calculator default to a 1.5× overtime multiplier?

"Time and a half" (1.5×) is the most common overtime premium required by US federal law (the Fair Labor Standards Act) for non-exempt employees working more than 40 hours in a week — but the multiplier is adjustable since some jurisdictions, union contracts, or holiday-pay policies use different rates (like 2× for "double time").

How are regular and overtime hours split?

Hours up to your specified weekly threshold (40 by default) are paid at your regular rate; any hours beyond that threshold are paid at your regular rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier — the calculator automatically splits your total hours worked into these two buckets before calculating pay for each.

What if I work fewer hours than the regular threshold?

All hours are paid at the regular rate and overtime pay shows $0 — the calculator only applies the overtime multiplier to hours actually worked beyond the threshold, never to hours below it.

Does this calculator handle daily overtime rules?

No — it calculates overtime based only on a weekly hours threshold. Some jurisdictions (like California) also have daily overtime rules (for example, overtime after 8 hours in a single day) that this calculator doesn't model; check your local labor law if daily overtime rules apply to your situation.
