Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredient formats does the scaler understand?

It parses a leading quantity in decimal form (like "1.5"), simple fraction form (like "1/2"), or mixed-number form (like "1 1/2"), followed by the rest of the ingredient text — so lines like "1 1/2 cups flour" or "0.5 tsp salt" both scale correctly.

What happens to lines without a leading number?

They're passed through unchanged — useful for instructions or ingredients described without a measurable quantity (like "salt to taste" or a section header), which shouldn't be altered by the scaling factor.

How are the scaled quantities rounded?

Results are rounded to 2 decimal places and trailing zeros are trimmed, so you get clean numbers like "3" or "2.25" instead of long decimal strings — though very awkward-to-measure results (like 0.33 cups) are simply shown as-is, since converting to the nearest kitchen-friendly fraction isn't automated.

Can I scale down as well as up?

Yes — enter a target serving count smaller than the original to scale a recipe down; the same multiplication logic applies whether the scaling factor is greater than or less than 1.
