Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between total ROI and annualized ROI (CAGR)?

Total ROI is the overall percentage gain or loss over the entire holding period, regardless of how long it took. CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) converts that same total return into an equivalent constant yearly rate — useful for comparing investments held for different lengths of time on an apples-to-apples basis.

Why is CAGR usually smaller than a naive "total ROI ÷ years" calculation?

Because CAGR accounts for compounding — each year's growth builds on the previous year's already-grown value, not the original principal, so the equivalent constant annual rate needed to reach the same final value is a geometric rate, not a simple linear average.

Does this tool account for taxes, fees, or inflation?

No — it calculates raw ROI and CAGR based only on the initial and final values you enter. If you want an after-tax, after-fee, or inflation-adjusted figure, subtract those costs from your final value before entering it.

Can I use this for something other than stocks, like real estate or a business?

Yes — the math works identically for any investment where you can define a starting value, an ending value, and a holding period, whether that's stocks, real estate, a business sale, or any other asset.
