Frequently Asked Questions

How does "remove tax from total" work?

Given a tax-inclusive total and the tax rate, the pre-tax price is total ÷ (1 + rate), not simply total minus the tax percentage — this is the standard reverse-tax calculation used to back out the tax amount from a final, tax-included price.

Can I use this for VAT or GST instead of US-style sales tax?

Yes — the math (adding or removing a percentage) is identical regardless of what the tax is called locally. Just enter the applicable VAT/GST rate as the tax rate.

Does this handle compound or multiple tax rates (state + local)?

Not automatically — if you have separate state and local rates, add them together first (e.g., 6.25% state + 2% local = 8.25% combined) and enter that combined rate, since most US sales tax is calculated as a single combined percentage.

Why is 8.25% the default rate?

It's just a common example rate shown to demonstrate the calculation — replace it with whatever tax rate applies in your jurisdiction.
