Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set a different priority or changefreq for individual URLs?
Yes. Append pipe-delimited overrides to any line as url|priority|changefreq|lastmod. Any part you omit falls back to the shared defaults above the URL box.
Does it validate that my URLs are reachable?
No. This tool only formats whatever text you paste into <loc> tags — it does not send any network requests to check that the pages exist or return 200 OK.
What is the maximum number of URLs a real sitemap can hold?
The sitemap protocol caps a single file at 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed. This tool does not enforce that limit, so very large lists should be split across multiple sitemap files with a sitemap index.
Can I leave out priority, changefreq, or lastmod entirely?
Yes. Untick any of the three "Include" checkboxes and that element is omitted from every <url> block, which matches how many modern sitemaps are generated since Google mostly ignores priority and changefreq anyway.
What is that robots.txt line at the bottom for?
It is a convenience snippet. Adding a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt file is the standard way to point crawlers at your sitemap location.
