Frequently Asked Questions
How is the fingerprint calculated?
It is the SHA256 hash of the base64-decoded key blob, re-encoded in unpadded base64 and prefixed with "SHA256:" — the same as ssh-keygen -lf.
Is it safe to paste my key?
Only paste public keys (.pub). Hashing happens locally in your browser, and private keys should never be pasted anywhere.
Which key types work?
Any OpenSSH public key line, including ssh-ed25519, ssh-rsa and ecdsa-sha2-* keys.
Why two fingerprints?
Modern OpenSSH shows SHA256; older tools displayed colon-separated MD5/SHA1. SHA1 is shown for legacy comparison.
