Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I just compare the two prices directly?

Products are often sold in different package sizes, so the sticker price alone is misleading — a $8.49 item might actually be cheaper per ounce than a $4.99 item if it contains proportionally much more product. Dividing price by quantity removes the package-size variable and reveals the true cost per unit.

Do the units need to match between Product A and Product B?

Yes — for the comparison to be meaningful, both quantities need to be in the same unit (both in ounces, both in grams, both in count, etc.). If one package lists ounces and the other lists grams, convert one to match the other's unit before comparing.

Why does the result show 4 decimal places for unit price?

Per-unit prices are often very small fractions of a dollar (like $0.05 per gram), and rounding to just 2 decimal places can hide real differences between products — 4 decimal places preserves enough precision to see a true cost difference even on small-unit items.

Is the cheaper unit price always the better choice?

Usually, but not always — consider whether you'll actually use the larger quantity before it expires or goes stale, storage space, and whether a "bulk discount" size forces you to buy more than you need. Unit price tells you cost efficiency, not necessarily the smartest purchase for your specific situation.
