VS Code settings.json Generator
NewPick common editor, formatting, and workspace settings via checkboxes and generate a ready-to-use .vscode/settings.json.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this only work for workspace settings, or user settings too?
The generated JSON is valid for both — you can drop it into a project's .vscode/settings.json for a shared, per-repo config, or merge the same keys into your personal global settings.json if you want them everywhere.
Why does enabling "Fix ESLint issues on save" require the ESLint extension?
The generated editor.codeActionsOnSave entry for source.fixAll.eslint only does something if the VS Code ESLint extension is installed in that workspace — the setting itself is just telling VS Code which code action to run on save, not installing the extension for you.
What does "Default formatter: Prettier" actually set?
It sets editor.defaultFormatter to esbenp.prettier-vscode, which is the official Prettier extension's identifier. Combined with "Format on save," this makes VS Code run Prettier automatically every time you save a file, provided that extension is installed.
Can I control the tab size value, or is it fixed at 2?
You can edit the small inline number field next to the "Tab size" checkbox — it defaults to 2 spaces but accepts any value, and the JSON output updates live as you change it.
Will unchecking a box remove that setting from the output, or set it to false?
For boolean toggles that are "on by default" in VS Code (like bracket pair colorization), unchecking simply omits that key from the JSON rather than explicitly writing false, since an absent key already falls back to VS Code's own default behavior.
