How to Use the Acronym Generator — WebdevToolbox Guide

Turn any phrase into an acronym or initialism, with options to skip minor connector words, choose a separator, and control casing.

“National Aeronautics and Space Administration” becomes NASA, not NAASA — real acronyms skip minor connector words like “and,” “of,” and “the” unless they’re the very first word. This tool follows that same convention automatically.

What Is the Acronym Generator?

Type any phrase and get back its acronym or initialism, built from the first letter of each significant word. Minor connector words are skipped by default (matching how real-world acronyms are actually formed), and you can choose whether to separate the letters with nothing, periods, or hyphens, plus whether the result is uppercase or lowercase.

How to Use It

  1. Open the tool at /tools/acronym-generator.
  2. Type your phrase into the input.
  3. Toggle “Skip minor words” on or off depending on whether you want words like “of” and “the” included.
  4. Choose a separator style — none, periods, or hyphens.
  5. Pick uppercase or lowercase, and read the result along with the word-by-word breakdown.

Key Features

  • Minor-word skipping, matching how acronyms like NASA are conventionally formed, while always keeping the first word’s letter.
  • Three separator styles — plain letters, period-separated (like “U.S.A.”), or hyphen-separated.
  • Case control for the final result.
  • Word-by-word breakdown showing exactly which words contributed a letter and which were skipped.

When to Use This Tool

  • Naming a project, team, or product and wanting to see what acronym it naturally forms.
  • Checking whether a phrase produces a confusing or unintended acronym before committing to it.
  • Quickly abbreviating long organization or document names for reference.

Try It Now

Open Acronym Generator directly, or press ⌘K and type the tool name from anywhere on the site.
