Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the tool skip words like "the," "of," and "and" by default?

Real-world acronyms conventionally drop minor connector words unless they're the very first word — for example, "National Aeronautics and Space Administration" becomes NASA, not NAASA — so this is on by default to match how acronyms are actually formed in practice, though you can turn it off.

What's the difference between an acronym and an initialism, and does this tool distinguish between them?

An acronym is pronounced as a word (like "NASA"), while an initialism is spelled out letter by letter (like "FBI") — the distinction is about pronunciation, not construction, so this tool generates the same kind of letter sequence for both; whether your result reads as one or the other depends on the actual letters produced.

Can I add periods between the letters, like "U.S.A."?

Yes — the separator dropdown includes a periods option, which also adds a trailing period after the last letter, matching the traditional style used for abbreviations like "U.S.A." or "e.g."

Why does the breakdown show some words struck through?

Struck-through words are the ones being skipped (minor connector words, when that option is enabled) so you can see exactly which words contributed a letter to the final acronym and which were excluded.

Does the very first word ever get skipped, even if it's a minor word?

No — the first word of the phrase always contributes its letter to the acronym regardless of whether it's in the minor-words list, since skipping the very first letter would usually produce a nonsensical or misleading result.
