Most classical substitution ciphers swap one letter for another. The Bifid cipher does something more interesting — it breaks each letter down into coordinates, mixes those coordinates across the whole message, and reassembles genuinely different letters, spreading each original letter’s influence across the ciphertext.
What Is the Bifid Cipher Tool?
Enter a keyed 5x5 grid (or use the default) and your message, and the tool converts each letter to its row/column position, writes all the rows followed by all the columns, re-pairs that combined sequence, and converts each new pair back into a letter — with full decrypt support to reverse the process.
How to Use It
- Open the tool at /tools/bifid-cipher.
- Type your message into the text field.
- Enter a keyword to build a custom 5x5 grid order, or keep the default.
- Click Encrypt or Decrypt.
- Copy the resulting text.
Key Features
- True fractionation, not just substitution — each letter’s identity is spread across the whole message.
- Keyed grid support so sender and receiver can share a custom letter arrangement.
- Verified against the classical Wikipedia reference example for exact accuracy.
- Fully client-side, nothing ever leaves your browser.
When to Use This Tool
- Learning how fractionating ciphers resist basic frequency analysis better than simple substitution.
- Cryptography history and coursework covering Félix Delastelle’s cipher family.
- Puzzle and escape-room design needing a cipher with genuine cryptanalytic depth.
