Writing release notes by hand from a wall of commit messages is tedious, and if your team already follows Conventional Commits, most of the grouping work is already done for you — this tool just formats it.
What Is the Changelog Generator?
The Changelog Generator parses conventional-commit-style lines (feat:, fix:, docs:, etc.) and produces a formatted release section following the Keep a Changelog convention, grouped into Added, Fixed, Changed, Breaking Changes, and more.
How to Use It
- Open the tool at /tools/changelog-generator.
- Paste your commit subject lines, one per line (for example, copied from
git log --oneline). - Set the version heading and date.
- Copy the generated changelog section straight into your CHANGELOG.md.
Key Features
- Recognizes all standard Conventional Commits types, including scopes like
feat(api): .... - Breaking-change detection via a
!marker or aBREAKING CHANGE:line, routed to its own section. - Non-conforming lines aren’t dropped — they land in an “Other” section instead of disappearing.
- Runs entirely client-side — no repository access or git integration required.
When to Use This Tool
- Preparing release notes from a batch of commit messages before tagging a release.
- Cleaning up a changelog that’s fallen behind conventional-commit discipline.
- Quickly previewing how your commit history would read as a formal changelog entry.
