How to Use the CSS Container Query Generator — WebdevToolbox Guide

Build a @container CSS query that responds to a parent container's own size rather than the viewport, with the required container-type setup included.

Media queries respond to the browser viewport — but what if you want a reusable component, like a card, to adapt to the size of whatever container it’s placed inside, regardless of the overall page width? That’s exactly what CSS container queries solve, and all major browsers have supported them since 2023.

What Is the CSS Container Query Generator?

Set an optional container name, pick a condition (min-width, max-width, min-height, or max-height), enter a breakpoint value, and paste the CSS rules you want applied — the tool generates a complete, ready-to-use @container block along with the required container-type declaration for the parent element.

How to Use It

  1. Open the tool at /tools/css-container-query-generator.
  2. Optionally name your container (useful when you have multiple nested containers).
  3. Choose a condition and breakpoint value.
  4. Paste the CSS rules that should apply inside the container query.
  5. Copy the generated CSS and apply container-type to the actual parent element in your stylesheet.

Key Features

  • Generates both the @container rule and the required parent container-type setup.
  • Supports named containers to disambiguate nested container query sources.
  • Covers all four size conditions — min-width, max-width, min-height, max-height.
  • No build step or preprocessor needed — plain, modern CSS output.

When to Use This Tool

  • Building genuinely reusable components (cards, widgets, sidebars) that adapt based on their container, not the viewport.
  • Design systems where the same component appears in narrow sidebars and wide main content areas.
  • Learning the modern container query syntax without memorizing the exact property names.

Try It Now

Open CSS Container Query Generator directly, or press ⌘K and type the tool name from anywhere on the site.
