Flashcards are one of the oldest, most effective active-recall study techniques — and you don’t need an app download or account to use them. Our flashcard maker lets you build a custom deck on the spot and start studying immediately.
How it works
- Type a term or question into the “Front” field and its answer into the “Back” field, then click Add Card.
- Your card is added to the deck, and the deck counter updates instantly.
- Click Flip, or click the card itself, to toggle between the front and back.
- Use Next → and ← Prev to move through the deck — navigation wraps around, so pressing Next on the last card takes you back to the first.
- Shuffle randomizes the deck order using the Fisher-Yates algorithm, useful for breaking memorization of card order rather than content.
- Clear Deck empties everything and resets the study session.
Why it doesn’t save your deck
This tool runs entirely in your browser with no server storage or account system — your deck exists only in memory for the current session. That’s a deliberate tradeoff: no sign-up, no data collection, completely private, but refreshing the page clears your cards. Build your deck fresh each session, or jot down important cards separately if you want to reuse them later.
A study tip: active recall beats passive review
Research on spaced repetition and active recall consistently shows that trying to produce the answer yourself — rather than just re-reading notes — cements material in long-term memory far more effectively. Flip through your deck attempting to answer before revealing the back, rather than flipping immediately; that small discipline is where most of the learning benefit actually comes from.
Good use cases
Vocabulary drills, definitions for an upcoming exam, historical dates, programming syntax you keep forgetting, or quick interview-prep Q&A — anywhere a simple front/back recall format helps you internalize information faster than passive reading.
