Flooring Calculator: How Many Boxes Do You Actually Need?

Calculate boxes of tile, laminate, hardwood, or vinyl flooring needed from room dimensions, waste allowance, and coverage per box. Free client-side calculator.

Buying too little flooring means a mid-project trip to the store and a risk the dye lot won’t match. Buying way too much wastes money. Our flooring calculator finds the right middle ground by combining room area, a waste allowance, and your product’s coverage-per-box figure.

The calculation

Room area = length × width
Area with waste = room area × (1 + waste% / 100)
Boxes needed = ceiling(area with waste ÷ coverage per box)

Example

A 12ft × 10ft room (120 sq ft), 10% waste allowance, boxes covering 20 sq ft each:

  • Room area: 120 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: 132 sq ft
  • Boxes needed: ceil(132 ÷ 20) = 7 boxes

Choosing a waste percentage

  • 10%: simple rectangular room, straight installation pattern
  • 15%: room with a few corners, closets, or a diagonal layout
  • 20%+: complex room shapes, herringbone/diagonal patterns, or a first-time DIY installer who expects more mis-cuts

Finding your coverage-per-box number

Check the flooring product’s box label or spec sheet — this varies enormously by product type. Large-format tile might cover 15-20 sq ft per box; narrow hardwood planks might only cover 18-24 sq ft per box despite looking similar in box size. Always use your specific product’s number rather than guessing.

Measure every area that will receive the same flooring — including closets and alcoves — and add them to the total square footage before applying the waste percentage.
