Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the calculator add a waste percentage on top of the raw room area?

Cutting flooring to fit around corners, doorways, and irregular room shapes always produces some unusable offcuts, so contractors typically buy 10% extra for simple rectangular rooms and up to 15-20% for rooms with lots of angles, diagonal layouts, or a diagonal installation pattern.

Where do I find the "coverage per box" number?

It's printed on the flooring product's packaging or spec sheet, usually in square feet per box or carton — this varies significantly by product (a box of large-format tile covers much more area than a box of narrow hardwood planks), so always use your specific product's figure rather than a generic estimate.

Why does the boxes-needed number round up instead of showing a decimal?

Flooring is sold in whole, sealed boxes — you can't buy 6.3 boxes, so the calculator rounds up to the next whole box to make sure you have enough material, even though this means you'll typically have a small amount of leftover flooring.

Should I measure the room including closets and alcoves?

Yes, if you're flooring those spaces too — measure the full footprint of every area that will receive flooring, then add the waste percentage on top of that total combined area, not just the main room rectangle.
