Whether you’re tracking a single semester or your full college transcript, the GPA Calculator does the weighted-average math for you — add each course’s letter grade and credit hours, and watch your GPA update live.
How GPA is actually calculated
GPA isn’t a simple average of your letter grades — it’s a credit-weighted average. Each course’s grade point value gets multiplied by its credit hours to produce “quality points,” all quality points are summed across every course, and that total is divided by your total credit hours. A high grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course, which is why two students with the same letter grades can end up with different GPAs if their credit loads differ.
4.0 vs. 5.0 scales
Most US colleges use a standard 4.0 scale where an A earns 4.0 points. Some high schools use a weighted 5.0 scale for honors, AP, or IB courses — giving those courses up to 5.0 points to reflect their added rigor. This tool supports both, so you can match whichever scale your school or transcript uses.
Plus/minus grades included
Since plus/minus grading (A-, B+, C-, and so on) is now standard at most institutions, the tool includes the full set of point values for each — not just whole letter grades — so your calculation matches how your actual transcript is graded.
