Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the 4.0 and 5.0 scales?
A standard unweighted scale tops out at 4.0 for an A, while a 5.0 (weighted) scale is often used for honors/AP/IB courses to reflect their added difficulty, giving an A up to 5.0 points instead of 4.0 — check with your school which scale it uses for official transcripts.
How is GPA actually calculated from grades and credits?
Each course's grade point value is multiplied by its credit hours to get quality points, all quality points are summed, then divided by the total credit hours — so a high grade in a high-credit course affects your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.
Do plus/minus grades (like A- or B+) use different point values?
Yes — this tool includes the standard plus/minus point values (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.) used by most US colleges, rather than only whole-letter grades, since plus/minus grading is now the norm at most institutions.
Can I calculate a cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?
Yes — just add every course from all semesters as rows with their respective grades and credit hours; the calculation naturally produces a cumulative GPA across everything entered, not just a single term.
