Random-character passwords are strong but nearly impossible to remember or type reliably. Diceware-style passphrases — a random sequence of ordinary words — offer comparable or better security while actually being memorable.
What Is the Passphrase Generator?
Generates a passphrase by randomly selecting words from a curated 307-word list, using the Web Crypto API’s cryptographically secure random number generator — the same principle behind the well-known diceware method, minus the physical dice.
How to Use It
- Open the tool at /tools/passphrase-generator.
- Choose how many words you want (3–12).
- Pick a separator, and toggle capitalization or an appended random number.
- Click “Regenerate” for a new passphrase, or Copy to grab the current one.
Key Features
- Cryptographically secure randomness via
crypto.getRandomValues(), notMath.random(). - Live entropy estimate in bits, calculated from word count and list size.
- Configurable separators, capitalization, and an optional appended number.
- 307-word curated list covering nature, colors, animals, and everyday objects.
When to Use This Tool
- Creating a memorable master password for a password manager.
- Generating a passphrase for disk encryption or SSH keys that’s both strong and typeable.
- Understanding how passphrase entropy is actually calculated, with the math shown transparently.
