Bifid fractionates each letter into two coordinates on a flat 5x5 grid. Trifid takes that idea and adds a third dimension — a 3x3x3 cube of 27 letters — spreading each letter’s identity across the message even more thoroughly than its two-dimensional predecessor.
What Is the Trifid Cipher Tool?
Enter a keyword and your message, and the tool builds a 27-letter cube (26 letters plus a 27th “+” symbol), converts each letter to its (layer, row, column) coordinates, concatenates all the layer-digits, row-digits, and column-digits within each block, then reads the combined sequence back off in trigrams to produce the ciphertext — with full decrypt support.
How to Use It
- Open the tool at /tools/trifid-cipher.
- Type your message into the text field.
- Enter a keyword to build the 27-letter cube order, or keep the default.
- Set a group size (5 or 7 are classic choices), or leave the default.
- Click Encrypt or Decrypt, then copy the result.
Key Features
- Three-dimensional fractionation, going a step beyond Bifid’s two-dimensional mixing.
- Configurable group size, following the classical hand-cipher error-containment convention.
- Verified against Félix Delastelle’s own published example, encrypting the French phrase “aide-toi, le ciel t’aidera” to the exact reference ciphertext.
- Fully client-side, nothing ever leaves your browser.
When to Use This Tool
- Studying advanced classical fractionating ciphers beyond the simpler Bifid and Four-Square ciphers.
- Cryptography coursework covering Delastelle’s full family of ciphers.
- Puzzle design needing a cipher with genuine historical depth and cryptanalytic resistance.
