Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a GPA calculator?

A GPA calculator averages letter grades across multiple whole courses weighted by credit hours. This tool calculates the grade *within a single course*, weighting different assignment categories (homework, quizzes, exams, participation) by the percentage each contributes to your final grade — a completely different calculation used at a different stage.

What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator shows a warning and still computes a mathematically valid weighted average (it normalizes by dividing by your actual total weight rather than assuming 100%) — but you should double-check your syllabus, since most courses are designed so weights sum to exactly 100%, and a mismatch usually means a data-entry mistake or a category you forgot to enter.

Can I add or remove categories to match my specific syllabus?

Yes — click "+ Add category" to add as many categories as your course uses (participation, labs, projects, midterms, finals, etc.), or click the ✕ next to any row to remove a category you don't need. The calculation updates instantly as you edit.

How is the letter grade determined?

The calculator uses a standard US plus/minus scale (93+=A, 90-92=A-, 87-89=B+, and so on down to below 60=F) — check your specific school or instructor's grading scale, since some institutions use different cutoffs or don't use plus/minus grades at all.
