Most course syllabi describe grading as “homework 20%, quizzes 30%, exams 50%” — but turning that into an actual number requires a weighted average, not a simple average. Our weighted grade calculator lets you enter any number of categories with their own weight and score, and computes the true overall grade instantly.
The formula
Overall grade = Σ(category score × category weight) ÷ Σ(category weights)
Dividing by the total weight (rather than assuming it’s always 100) means the calculator still produces a mathematically correct result even if your weights don’t sum to exactly 100% — though it will flag that mismatch so you can double-check your syllabus for a data-entry error.
Example
Homework 20% @ 85%, Quizzes 30% @ 78%, Exams 50% @ 90%:
(85×20 + 78×30 + 90×50) / (20+30+50) = 8,540 / 100 = 85.4%
That comes out to a B on a standard plus/minus scale.
Not the same as GPA
A GPA calculator averages letter grades across multiple whole courses, weighted by credit hours. This tool calculates the grade within a single course, weighting different assignment categories. They solve different problems and use entirely different math — if you need cross-course GPA, use our GPA calculator instead.
Fully customizable categories
Add as many categories as your course syllabus actually uses — participation, labs, projects, midterms, and finals can all be entered separately with their own weights, and the calculation updates live as you type.
