Frequently Asked Questions

Why does "working weeks per year" matter if most jobs are 52 weeks a year?

Salaried employees are typically paid for all 52 weeks (including paid time off), so the default is 52 — but if you're converting an hourly rate for someone with significant unpaid time off, or comparing to a contract with a defined number of working weeks, adjusting this figure down gives a more accurate equivalent.

How is the conversion calculated in each direction?

Hourly → salary multiplies the hourly rate by total annual hours (hours per week × working weeks per year). Salary → hourly does the reverse, dividing the annual salary by that same total hours figure — both directions use the identical hours calculation, just applied in opposite order.

Does this account for overtime pay?

No — this calculator assumes a flat rate across all hours entered. If you work overtime hours at a different (typically 1.5×) rate, use our dedicated Overtime Pay Calculator instead, which handles regular and overtime hours separately.

Does the salary figure include benefits, bonuses, or taxes?

No — this is a gross wage-to-wage conversion only. It doesn't add the value of benefits (health insurance, 401k matching, etc.) that often make a salaried position worth more than the raw hourly-equivalent number suggests, nor does it subtract taxes.
