Job offers list pay in whatever unit is most flattering — hourly contractors often see annual figures, salaried roles sometimes get hourly comparisons for overtime-eligible positions. Our hourly to salary calculator converts cleanly in both directions.
The formula
Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Working weeks per year
Reversed:
Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Working weeks per year)
The “working weeks per year” field matters more than people expect. Using 52 assumes you work every single week with no unpaid time off. If you get 2 unpaid weeks off, use 50. This single input can shift the converted number by a few percent, which matters when comparing offers.
Example
$25/hour, 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year → $52,000/year exactly. Switch the toggle to go the other direction: a $52,000 salary at 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year converts back to exactly $25.00/hour.
When this comparison is misleading
Hourly wages usually come with overtime eligibility (see our overtime pay calculator for the math there), while most salaried roles don’t pay extra for hours beyond 40/week. A $52,000 salary with regular 45-hour weeks is effectively a lower “real” hourly rate than a $25/hour hourly job that pays time-and-a-half past 40 hours. Always compare total expected annual compensation, not just the headline number.
Benefits (health insurance, 401k match, PTO) aren’t captured by this calculator at all — factor those in separately when comparing two offers.
