Frequently Asked Questions
Does this send my text to a cloud text-to-speech API?
No — it uses the Web Speech API's built-in SpeechSynthesis interface, which is implemented natively by your browser/operating system. Your text is processed entirely on your device and never sent anywhere.
Why is the voice list empty or different on different devices?
Available voices come directly from your browser and operating system's installed speech synthesis voices, which vary by platform (Windows, macOS, Chrome OS) and can take a moment to load asynchronously — the list automatically repopulates once your browser reports the voices are ready.
What do the Rate and Pitch sliders control?
Rate controls how fast the speech plays (1.0 is normal speed, higher is faster), and Pitch controls the relative pitch of the voice (1.0 is the voice's default pitch) — both map directly to the standard SpeechSynthesisUtterance.rate and .pitch properties.
Why did nothing happen when I clicked Play?
Some browsers require a user interaction (like a click) before allowing audio playback, and this tool's Play button already satisfies that — if it still doesn't work, check that the "Unsupported" warning isn't showing, since SpeechSynthesis support does vary by browser.
Can I pause partway through and resume from the same spot?
Yes — the Pause and Resume buttons call the browser's native speechSynthesis.pause() and .resume() methods, which suspend and continue the same utterance rather than restarting it from the beginning.
