How to Use the Text to Speech Reader — WebdevToolbox Guide

Paste any text and have your browser read it aloud, with voice, rate, and pitch controls, using the native Web Speech API.

Sometimes you want to listen to a draft rather than read it, proofread an article by ear, or just need a quick voice readout of some text without installing an app or paying for a cloud TTS API. This tool uses your browser’s built-in speech synthesis engine to read any text aloud, for free.

What Is the Text to Speech Reader?

Paste or type text, pick a voice from your system’s available voices, adjust the speaking rate and pitch, and press Play. The tool uses the browser-native SpeechSynthesis API, so no audio file is generated or uploaded — the speech is synthesized locally by your operating system or browser.

How to Use It

  1. Open the tool at /tools/text-to-speech-reader.
  2. Paste or type the text you want read aloud.
  3. Choose a voice, and adjust the rate and pitch sliders to taste.
  4. Press Play, and use Pause/Resume/Stop as needed.

Key Features

  • Uses the native Web Speech API — no server calls, no API key, no file upload.
  • Voice selection from every voice installed on your system/browser.
  • Adjustable rate and pitch, for faster proofreading listens or a more natural pace.
  • Play, Pause, Resume, and Stop controls for full playback control.

When to Use This Tool

  • Proofreading a draft by ear to catch awkward phrasing you’d otherwise skim past visually.
  • Accessibility testing, hearing how a screen-reader-adjacent voice will render your content.
  • Quickly listening to long text — documentation, articles, or notes — while multitasking.

Try It Now

Open Text to Speech Reader directly, or press ⌘K and type the tool name from anywhere on the site.
