Frequently Asked Questions
How is WPM (words per minute) actually calculated?
Using the standard typing-test convention, every 5 characters typed (including spaces) counts as one "word," regardless of actual word boundaries — this standardizes the measurement so that typing tests using different passages with different average word lengths remain comparable.
How is accuracy calculated?
It compares each typed character against the same position in the target passage and computes the percentage that match exactly — so accuracy reflects character-for-character correctness, not just whether the overall meaning was preserved.
Does the timer start as soon as the page loads?
No — the timer only starts the moment you type your first character, so there's no penalty for taking time to read the passage before you begin typing.
Can I try a different passage?
Yes — click "Try a new passage" at any point to reset the timer and get a new randomly-selected sample passage to type.
