Curious how your typing speed stacks up, or want a quick warm-up before a coding session? The Typing Speed Test times you against a short passage and reports your words-per-minute (WPM) and accuracy live.
How WPM is calculated
Typing tests use a standardized convention: every 5 characters typed (including spaces) counts as one “word,” regardless of actual word boundaries. This matters because real words vary wildly in length — without this convention, a test full of short words would produce an inflated WPM compared to one full of long words. The 5-character rule keeps results comparable across different passages.
How accuracy is measured
Accuracy compares each character you’ve typed so far against the same position in the target passage, character by character, and reports the percentage that match exactly. It updates live as you type — so a single typo early on will show up immediately, not just at the end.
No penalty for reading first
The timer doesn’t start the moment the page loads — it starts on your very first keystroke. Take as long as you need to read the passage before you start; only your actual typing time counts toward WPM.
