Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the tool keep the first and last letter in place by default?

It recreates the well-known "you can still read scrambled words as long as the first and last letters stay in place" effect, which makes for a genuinely readable puzzle rather than completely illegible output — you can turn this off for a much harder challenge.

What does the minimum word length setting control?

Words shorter than this length are left completely untouched, since very short words (like "a," "is," or "the") either can't be meaningfully scrambled or would just reveal the same word when shuffled.

Does scrambling affect punctuation attached to a word?

No — leading and trailing punctuation (like quotation marks, commas, or periods) is detected and preserved outside the scramble, so only the actual letters of each word get shuffled.

Why does clicking "Re-shuffle" sometimes produce a different result each time?

Each shuffle uses a fresh random ordering (a Fisher-Yates shuffle), so re-running it on the same input text generates a new scrambled arrangement every time rather than a fixed, repeatable one.

What is this useful for?

Common uses include building word puzzle games, testing text readability/OCR robustness, creating classroom exercises, or just for fun — demonstrating how human reading is more resilient to mid-word letter scrambling than you might expect.
