Hangman needs no introduction — guess letters one at a time, reveal a hidden word, and avoid running out of attempts. Our hangman tool brings the classic game to the browser with a developer-themed word list (JAVASCRIPT, ALGORITHM, DATABASE, and more), playable entirely with mouse clicks or your physical keyboard.
How the game works
Each wrong guess advances an ASCII-art gallows drawing through six stages — head, torso, two arms, two legs. Guess the word correctly before all six stages appear and you win; complete the drawing first and the game reveals the answer.
Design details worth noting
- Keyboard support: pressing any A-Z key registers the same guess as clicking its on-screen button — no mouse required.
- Duplicate letters reveal together: guessing “A” in “DATABASE” reveals both A’s at once, since the check is “does the word include this letter,” not “does this specific position match.”
- Used letters lock out: once a letter is guessed (right or wrong), its button disables and color-codes green (correct) or red (wrong), so you always know your guess history at a glance.
Why a programming word list
Generic hangman word lists tend toward random dictionary words. Since this is a developer tools site, the word list draws entirely from programming and computer-science vocabulary — a small touch, but it keeps the game on-theme rather than feeling like a generic filler feature.
Click “New Word” any time to restart with a freshly randomized word from the list.
