Wondering if that risky play is actually worth it before you commit your tiles? The Scrabble Score Calculator instantly totals up any word’s point value using the official English-language letter values.
How Scrabble tile scoring works
Every letter has a fixed point value based on how common (and how useful) it is:
- 1 point: A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R (the most common letters)
- 2 points: D, G
- 3 points: B, C, M, P
- 4 points: F, H, V, W, Y
- 5 points: K
- 8 points: J, X
- 10 points: Q, Z (the rarest, highest-value letters)
Type a word and the tool shows each tile with its value stacked below the letter, plus a running total.
Word and letter multipliers
The board itself adds multipliers for landing on special squares. This tool includes checkboxes for double word score and triple word score (which multiply the whole word’s total), since those are the most impactful bonus squares in actual gameplay. Individual letter-tile bonuses (double/triple letter score) depend on exactly where each letter lands on a specific board layout, so those aren’t modeled here — but the word-level multipliers cover the most common “is this play worth it” question.
Not the same as Words With Friends
Note that Words With Friends uses a different point distribution than official Scrabble, so a score calculated here won’t match that app’s scoring exactly — this tool follows the standard, official Scrabble letter values.
