Word searches are a classic, low-effort way to reinforce vocabulary — whether you’re a teacher building a spelling-list puzzle or just want a quick brain-teaser. Our word search generator builds one instantly from any list of words you provide.
How word placement works
- Words are sorted longest-first, since longer words have fewer valid positions and benefit from being placed before the grid fills up.
- Each word tries up to 200 random starting positions and directions (all 8 compass directions — horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals).
- A placement is accepted only if it stays inside the grid and doesn’t conflict with a different letter already placed by an earlier word (matching letters can overlap, which is how real word search puzzles sometimes share letters between intersecting words).
- Any cell left empty after all words are placed is filled with a random letter, which is what actually makes the puzzle a puzzle.
When a word won’t fit
If a word can’t be placed after 200 randomized attempts — usually because the grid is too small relative to your word list — it’s skipped and listed under “Could not fit.” Increasing the grid size or shortening especially long words usually resolves this.
Checking your work
Click “Show solution” to highlight every cell used by a placed word in amber. This is useful both for verifying your generated puzzle before printing it and for producing an answer key to go alongside the puzzle itself.
Good use cases
Classroom vocabulary or spelling practice, thematic party games, onboarding “company jargon” puzzles for new hires, or just a quick personal brain-teaser built around any word list you care about.
